calderm Community Outreach Service Grant

for Medical Students and Dermatology Residents

Purpose: To support medical students and residents in developing and implementing innovative community-based projects that further CalDerm’s mission of promoting skin health through public education, awareness, and advocacy.

APPLY FOR SERVICE GRANT

Topic Focus Areas: Projects should relate to dermatology and community health, with topics including but not limited to sun safety, skin health, and healthcare access. Examples include:

  • Skin cancer prevention and education
  • Access to dermatologic care in underserved communities
  • Cultural competency in dermatologic care
  • Skin health education for specific populations (e.g., pediatrics, elderly, occupational groups, minority populations)

Requirements

Eligible Applicants:

  • Current medical students or dermatologyresidents in accredited programs in California.

  • Applicants must have a faculty mentor to supervise and oversee project implementation, including compliance with institutional research requirements and use of funds.

  • Applicants must also identify a community partner.

Community Partners:
Community collaboration is required and may include:

  • Government agencies (e.g., Departments of Public Health, school districts)

  • Primary and secondary schools

  • Nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) or 170(c) tax-exempt IRS status

  • Faith-based organizations

  • Community-based health or social service agencies

  • Civic and volunteer associations

Award Information

  • Number of Awards: 1
  • Award Amount: $3000 per project
  • Allowable Expenses:
    • Educational materials and outreach supplies
    • Event-related costs (e.g., venue, permits, speakers)
    • Modest travel or transportation tied to project delivery
    • Printing, marketing, or communication directly related to the project
  • Unallowable Expenses:
    • Capital expenses, such as construction or large equipment purchases
    • Salaries or stipends for the grantee or staff not directly delivering project content
    • Debt repayment or reduction
    • Indirect costs not clearly tied to the project (e.g., general admin, utilities)
    • Lobbying or political activity
    • Projects based primarily outside of California
    • Gifts or prizes not directly tied to educational goals
    • Alcohol, cannabis, or controlled substances
    • Fundraising or development efforts

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit:

  1. Cover Page (Applicants and faculty mentor information, project title, community affiliations)

  2. Project Proposal (3–5 pages) including:

    • Background and significance

    • Goals and objectives

    • Target population and community partner(s)

    • Project plan, timeline, and methods

    • Evaluation metrics (how outcomes will be measured and impact assessed) 

    • Institutional research requirements (if applicable)

    • Institutional research requirements (if applicable)

    • Sustainability or long-term goals (if applicable)

  4. Faculty Mentor Letter of Support

  5. Letter of Commitment from Community Partner

Review and Selection Criteria

Proposals will be evaluated by the CalDerm Community Outreach Committee based on:

  • Relevance to dermatologic community health

  • Innovation and feasibility of the proposed project

  • Strength and appropriateness of community partnerships

  • Sustainability and potential for ongoing impact

  • Clarity of objectives, methods, and evaluation plan

  • Appropriateness of budget

Reporting and Deliverables

Grant recipients must:

  • Within 30 days of project completion, the Grantee agrees to submit:

    • A brief written report (1–2 pages) summarizing project activities, outcomes, and lessons learned

    • A 1–2 slide PowerPoint presentation highlighting the project’s impact

    • At least two high-quality photos documenting the project

      • If individuals are shown in the photos, the Grantee must obtain written confirmation of consent from all identifiable persons for their images to be used by CalDerm on social media or in other public communications.

    • Scanned receipts or records accounting for at least 75% of the total grant amount. Any funds not used or not supported with appropriate documentation must be returned to CalDerm within 30 days of the reporting deadline.

  • Deliver a poster presentation and submission for an oral presentation at the next CalDerm Conference (NorCal Conference or Fall Symposium) after project completion

  • Acknowledge CalDerm as the funding source in all deliverables and materials


Administration and Oversight

Grant Oversight: CalDerm Community Outreach Committee

Institutional, Administrative & Fiscal Oversight: Faculty mentor to guarantee compliance with institutional research requirements, and manage and approve expenses in compliance with CalDerm funding guidelines.
